Environment Matters

I hate working out at home; I really do. It works for some people, just not for me. I enjoy the fancy equipment, the good lighting, and seeing people working hard… It’s motivating for me. If you want to be consistent with your workouts, your environment matters. It’s a silly thing to think about, but it’s absolutely true.

Let me give you two scenarios.

Scenario 1 — You decide you need to start hitting the gym. You’ve never worked out or lifted weights before, so you read an article or two… poke around the internet, and ask ChatGPT some questions. Then you go down to your damp basement, to your “workout area”, with low ceilings, bad lighting, and laundry piled up in the corner. There are boxes and storage items on the opposite wall, limiting your space further. You start warming up, realize you only have half the weights you need, the equipment is rusted and compromised, you get frustrated, and you bail.

Scenario 2 — You decide you need to start hitting the gym. You’ve never worked out or lifted weights before, so you hire a knowledgeable trainer. You walk into their brightly lit gym, with motivational quotes on the walls, people laughing and high-fiving. There’s music going; people are working hard but having fun; the energy is high and the vibes are good. You start warming up, directed by your knowledgeable Coach, realize you can relax and trust the process, see progress and change your life.

That might not be everyone’s two scenarios, but after 8+ years of training people, it’s a lot of individuals’. And, it is certainly mine.

If working out at home is what you like and it works well for you, great! I am very happy for you. If you are struggling with your workouts and you have not tried getting out of your basement, try changing your environment!
