Being Social is Healthy

When we talk about overall health and well-being the conversation naturally devolves into working out and nutrition. Very little is discussed about sleep, stress, gut health, daily movement, and your social life.

Your social life and your social battery are a major part of your overall health. Studies into Blue Zones, pockets of the world where people live longer lives, show that one of the main characteristics is a robust social life. Therefore, it is important to monitor your social battery as you pursue your health and fitness goals.

Sometimes when people get invested and begin to work really hard at their health and wellness goals, they narrow their focus. It turns into making sure they get their workouts in and making sure they are eating healthy. That is a great start, however, it can come at a cost.

Speaking from experience, your social life and quickly take a hit. Going out with friends? Can’t… I have to work out tomorrow. Want to go to dinner for your anniversary? Can’t… It’s not on my diet plan. Want to celebrate your kid’s birthday with cake and ice cream? Don’t even think about it.

That is no way to live your life. Sometimes social events are MORE important than physical events and you need to balance them. Coming off plan for a meal to celebrate your grandkid’s birthday is an important part of life and one that should not be missed.

And… here is the kicker for the whole thing. If you are on track the majority of the time, coming off track for a social event won’t hurt you in the slightest. In fact, I would argue it makes you healthier by recharging your social battery.
