Teaching vs Coaching

When most people walk into a gym for the first time, what they expect is someone to show them what to do. And that is important. You need to learn how to squat, hinge, press, and move safely. That part is called teaching.

Teaching is about passing on knowledge. It is demonstrating an exercise, explaining proper setup, and giving cues so someone understands how a movement works. It is often one-directional. The coach explains, the client listens and applies. Teaching builds awareness and understanding (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023).

But coaching is different.

Coaching goes beyond instruction. It is an ongoing, adaptive process. Instead of simply delivering information, a coach observes, adjusts, and guides in real time. Coaching involves asking questions, reading body language, and helping someone apply what they know under stress or fatigue. It is collaborative and focused on development over time, not just understanding in the moment (College.dev, 2022).

Here is the difference in simple terms.

Teaching tells you what to do.
Coaching helps you become someone who can do it consistently.

At Iron Legion Scarborough, we absolutely teach. We show you how to move properly. We break down technique. We make sure you understand why you are doing what you are doing.

But more importantly, we coach.

We notice when you are nervous about adding weight.
We adjust when you did not sleep well because your kids were up all night.
We push when you are capable of more than you think.
We pull back when your body needs it.
We celebrate effort, not just numbers.

For beginners especially, this matters. Research consistently shows that guidance, accountability, and social support are major predictors of long-term exercise adherence (American College of Sports Medicine, 2022). Information alone does not create consistency. Relationships and accountability do.

Anyone can watch a video and learn an exercise. That is teaching.

Real progress happens when someone is in your corner, helping you navigate the ups and downs, adjusting the plan, and holding you to a higher standard than you would hold yourself.

Teaching builds knowledge.
Coaching builds confidence, resilience, and long-term results.

At Iron Legion Scarborough, we do both. But coaching is what truly changes people.
